Hi,

I have been trying to install sentry ii on Vista Home Premium (for a Pro1100E), without any luck.

Are there any options for Vista ?

Hello Bill-

Did you encounter any specific error messages during the installation of SentryII on Vista, or did the installation complete successfully?

Are you using the serial connection or the USB connection with the PRO1100E? If you are using USB, did you get the driver installed successfully?

SentryPlus is also another option for you here and can be downloaded from the top of this page:
http://www.minutemanups.com/support/soft_gen.php

The main differences are that SentryII has its own small embedded web server and all of the configuration and displays are managed through your browser. It's not quite as friendly as SentryPlus, which has its own program interface and does not rely on running a web server.

We have been successful in getting both programs to work fine in Vista Business. Please let us know some addtiional details on your setup and we'll try to help you get it running.

Thank you,

Todd

Thanks for the reply.

I am using USB, and I was able to install the (HID as I recall) drivers.
Not sure if it was successful, but it did not show any errors.

I'll try sentry plus as well.

Is there any test that would help me determine if the drivers are installed correctly ?

Vista version is Home Premium on an ASUS P5LD Mobo.

Hi, so now that I am at my pc here is more info:

Sentry ii - logged in as admin, when double click to install it runs, but I never get any screen prompts, and it exits without anything appearing to install (nothing new in program files). I did this with the default, Win XP SP2, and Win 2000 compatability modes set.

Sentry Plus- logged in as admin, errors with "The installshield engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched. Class not registered. I did this with the default, Win XP SP2, and Win 2000 compatability modes set.

Any ideas ?

Thnaks

Sounds like an InstallShield problem. This may be what you need to fix that error:

Here's some info about the USB driver and its installation:
Once you get the software installed, I would recommend using the serial cable if you have a free serial port since I know that works fine with either SentryII or SentryPlus in Vista. I have not tested the PRO-E USB scheme in Vista. It uses a Virtual COM port instead of the typical HID setup - that's why you need to install a driver for it to work properly.

As to a test about drivers being installed correctly, be sure to check your Device Manager to see if you have a new COM port in the "Ports (Com & Lpt)" section. If not, then the driver wasn't installed properly. If that is the case try the following procedure:

1) Right-click on the HID item in the device manager (this shows up when you first connect the USB cable to the PC and the UPS with the UPS powered on)

2) Choose "Update Driver Software"

3) Choose "Browse my computer for driver software"

4) Choose "Let me pick from a list" and "Have Disk"

5) Locate the hidcom.inf driver (either from your USB driver CD or download and unzip the drivers for the MBK-E and PRO-E from the software downloads page)
http://www.minutemanups.com/support/drivers/mbke-proe_usb_drivers.zip

6) Uncheck the "Show Compatible Hardware" box to show all the drivers, this will show a couple of additional entries

7) Select the "Cypress USB-HID -> COM device (Virtual Port)" bottom of this list

8) Finish the wizard and refresh Device Manager, the new port should appear in the Ports section if it worked, typically as COM3 or COM5 if COM1 is the serial port. There will no longer be any entry for the UPS in the HID section once the driver is installed

9) Download this version of SentryII that fixed a problem with the software and the PRO-E USB driver for XP, I have not tried this version on Vista but it is the version to use if you use USB and the PRO-E:
http://www.minutemanups.com/support/software/sentryII-v2-01-03-win32.zip

10) Once it's installed and the SentryII service is running, goto your browser and connect to http://127.0.0.1, login as admin (both user name and password), go into the Server settings page and choose the COM port# for the USB-HID driver that shows in the Device Manager (COM3, COM5, etc) and hit the save button.

11) Hit the refresh button once or twice in your browser, and you should see all of the UPS info load in the browser window.

Let us know what happens.

Todd,
I tried the installshield stuff, no luck .. :-(
Included the Dcom permissions as well.

On thing worth noting, the re-install of the installshiled yielded the same error, so I do not believe this is a Senrty problem, but InstallShield

Any idea where to go next ?

Thanks,

- Bill

Bill-

Are you logged in as Adminstratior or as a user account with adminstrative privileges? You might try to do right-click/run as admin on the setup program. It sounds like Vista's User Account Control could be causing problems with Installshield.

Yes, I am logged in as Administrator, and have UAC ? turned off, so that annoying "you must be admin" prompt does not pop up.

I see. Well, there seems to be several Installshield and/or Microsoft Installer MSI related problems posted on different message boards on the web, but very few solutions are given. In looking through a few posts, I found that there's a Windows Installer Cleanup Utility that might help you.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

You might want to give it a try in case the InstallShield problem is actually being caused by an MSI-related issue. I will continue looking to see if there are any other possible fixes.

By the way, have you tried installing any other software packages that use Installshield setup?

Re: Install Shield - No I have not tried anything else.

I too suspect it is an installshield issue.

When I re-installed InstallShield I got the same error.

Taken from this post:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/184345-48-error-extracting-support-files-interface-registered

If deleting and re-installing InstallShield engine fails. Try to manually re-register ctor.dll file by doing the following:

Goto Start->Run
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\engine\6\Intel 32\ctor.dll"

Cool sharing.
That helped a lot.
